Jennifer Aniston News: 'Cake' Star Says Father Begged Her not to Become an Actress, Encouraged Her to Try Law
In a recent interview with Collider, "Cake" actress Jennifer Aniston revealed her father tried to dissuade her from becoming an actress.
Jennifer Aniston's father, John Aniston, is an actor and best known for starring in the daytime soap opera "Days of our Lives." Given his previous knowledge and experience of show business, John urged his daughter not to become an actress because of his fear she would not be able to handle the rejection and pressures of being in the entertainment business, Jennifer explained.
But despite her father's dissuasion, Jennifer pursued her dream because she believed she could accomplish it.
"I just had this deep feeling in my gut that somehow something was going to happen, and I just had to be patient," Aniston said. "I was hellbent because my dad was just begging me not to be in the industry. He said, 'I do not want your heartbroken. The rejection is brutal. Please, please, please don't do that. Become a lawyer.'"
Her determination is what Jennifer describes as her "rebellion" against her father. She believes it is her defiance that helped her succeed.
"I was hoping that I was going to make it, so that I could prove him wrong. I just kept going. I'm happy he made that claim that he didn't want me to do it," she said.
In a separate interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Aniston said her mother, Nancy Dow, also gave her a hard time, specifically about her looks, growing up.
"She was critical," Aniston said. "She was very critical of me. Because she was a model, she was gorgeous, stunning. I wasn't. I never was. I honestly still don't think of myself in that sort of light, which is fine."
Yahoo! Celebrity reports Dow and John later split when Jennifer was 9-years-old. Jennifer was later sent to live with her grandmother for support.
"She was a Greek grandmother who just loved me more than anything and was so fun to be around," Jennifer said. "She had the best stories, she made me laugh. Beautiful, funny, gorgeous, hysterical -- all the Greeks, all of my Greek family, were."
