Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya believes the super fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will not happen on Cinco de Mayo weekend on May 2.

De La Hoya expressed belief that Mayweather, who holds a perfect 47-0 record with 26 knockouts, is not willing to face Pacquiao because of fear that his perfect record will be tainted.

The Hall of Fame boxer said that Mayweather wants to keep his record unblemished to prove he is the best of all time when he retires, but De La Hoya insisted retiring unbeaten is not enough.

"Mayweather will not fight Pacquiao, because he thinks that if he leaves the sports undefeated, he will be considered the best ever," De La Hoya told ESPN Deportes via BoxingScene. "But he won't be because people will respect you more when you face the toughest, the strongest, the most dangerous. It doesn't matter who, all of the biggest names lost -- Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali, Pacquiao."

De La Hoya is one of the biggest personalities pushing for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight over the past several years because the showdown between the best boxers of their generation will be good for the sport.

Another legend, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., also called out Mayweather and Pacquiao to settle their differences. Chavez said the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight should be made because fight fans have been asking for it over the past several years.

"The fight is meant to be done. Unfortunately, there has been no fight," Chavez said, referring to the long-awaited bout. "They need to do it for the benefit of fans around the world. However, it is a fight that eventually has to happen because Mayweather is being pressed hard by the fans and he's being pressed by the television network."

The camps of the two boxing superstars have been negotiating over the past several weeks. Recent reports indicated Pacquiao has already accepted a 60-40 split on fight purse and will also undergo random drug testing while training for the fight.

Both fighters reportedly agreed to stage the fight on May 2 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, but several details are still being ironed out, including the deal between rival networks Showtime and HBO. Mayweather has an exclusive contract with Showtime, while Pacquiao has a deal with HBO.
