AMC 'The Walking Dead' Midseason Premiere: Popular Show Returns With a Bang
AMC's "The Walking Dead" came back from its winter hiatus with an episode that Erik Kain of Forbes is saying just might be the best episode the series has seen in years.
Kain described the show titled “What Happened and What’s Going On” as a “tremendous tour de force that opened strong and finished with a bang.”
The post-apocalyptic show had dream-like moments of quiet reverie and damning hallucinations brought on by the Zombie sickness.
Tyreese, one of the shows strongest, most paternal characters, gets bitten by a walker and goes down into a mind trip wherein he confronts the demons of his past before being put down to ensure he does not come back.
Chad L. Coleman, who joined the show back in Season 3, thought it had to be a joke when he found out his character Tyreese was being killed off.
In an interview in Us Magazine he described getting the news from Scott Gimple, the showrunner:
"He said, 'It’s time. The time has come for Tyreese to go.' I said, 'You’re joking. You’re playing.' And I looked at him, and he teared up. And then I just kept going, 'Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.' And then when I finished saying wow, we gave each other a big hug and then I said, 'Hey, I had an amazing time on the show.' If I only did the episode of The Grove, I would walk away feeling very proud."
Fans were pretty upset by Tyreese's death.
And though the show has been applauded for its range of diverse characters it has also been pointed out, by Forbes and the New York Post, that an awful lot of non-white characters have been getting killed off as of late.
As the New York Post reported, when Tyreese expired from a walker bite, Twitter exploded with angry viewers complaining that on this show the black guy was always the first to die, and this was especially offensive as it had just happened again during Black History Month.
