Fitbit Fitness Watch Reviews: 100s Report Rashes From Smartwatch, Lawsuit Filed
Fitbit devices are designed to be worn all the time so that users can track their fitness and steps each day, but some users are complaining that the wristbands on their Fitbit devices are giving them itchy rashes/
Yahoo Tech reported Fitbit does not know what to say about the rashes caused by their devices besides "you don't have to wear them all the time."
One Fitbit spokesperson interviewed by Re/code said that there a few reasons why rashes could be developing from wearing the devices.
"According to our consulting dermatologists, they are likely from wearing the band too tight; sweat, water, or soap being held against the skin under the device; or from pressure or friction against the skin."
The spokesperson added that irritation "should resolve quickly when users take a break from the device, usually within hours or days."
That is not exactly a good idea for most Fitbit users, however, because the devices are meant to be worn all day to keep track of valuable fitness and sleep data.
ABC 7 in San Francisco took a look into complaints of rashes on the latest Fitbit devices. The news channel found over 200 cases of rashes reported on social media.
Fitbit CEO James Park insisted in a statement that the new devices are safe and the number of users that developed a rash are negligible.
Because of the rashes coming from wearing Fitbits, 14 users have decided to file a joint lawsuit against Fitbit. Additionally, the Consumer Product Safety Commission wants to investigate the rash reports.
Last year, a rash outbreak in the Fitbit Force required a recall. Two percent of Force users developed a rash. The Fitbit Force rashes were likely due to nickel allergies.
