Denver Broncos Roster & Rumors: Peyton Manning Won’t Retire, QB Physically Fight for 2015 NFL Season
Peyton Manning considered retirement, but the veteran quarterback has reportedly informed the Denver Broncos he is mentally and physically ready to play in the 2015 NFL season.
ESPN reported that Manning sat down with Broncos general manager John Elway and CEO Joe Ellis to make the team aware of his intention to make another run for a championship next season. No decision was ironed out during the meeting, but the Broncos are reportedly planning to announce the development next week.
Manning struggled late in the 2014 regular season and also failed to make a huge impact in their loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the American Football Conference divisional round. And recently he underwent comprehensive evaluation with trainer Mackie Shilstone.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported earlier this week that Shilstone will guide Manning in his training for the 2015 NFL season. Shilstone is credited for helping boxing world champions Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. prolong their respective careers.
Talks about Manning's possible retirement intensified after the 38-year-old quarterback said after their loss to the Colts that he is unsure about playing for the Broncos next season, but Manning's recent workouts with Shilstone reportedly convinced the veteran to return.
Elway, who decided to fire John Fox and hire Gary Kubiak as their new coach earlier this year, has reiterated last month that they want Manning to return next season despite revamping their coaching staff.
"The career that he's had and what he's done, not only for the NFL, but in the short time he's been here with the Denver Broncos, what he's meant to us is tremendous," Elway said via NFL.com. "We'll continue to monitor that, but the bottom line is we want him back, and it's going to come down to what Peyton wants to do."
Kubiak also made it no secret that Manning will still be their main man should he decide to return next season amid reports that they are planning to give 24-year-old Brock Osweiler a chance to shine in the 2015 NFL season.
Manning, who completed 66.2 percent of his passes last season for 4,727 yards with 39 touchdowns with 15 interceptions, is set to earn $19 million next season. His $19 million salary will be fully guaranteed if he is still on the roster when the free-agency period begins on March 9.
