New York Knicks News: Team Still Feeling the Pain From 2009 NBA Draft Even Today
More than 50 games into this NBA season, the New York Knicks are once again disappointing their fans.
The Knicks have the worst record in the NBA this season, 10-43. Carmelo Anthony is scheduled to take the rest of the year off, and the team isn't adjusting well to the triangle offense. With so many flaws on the team, fans can't help but look back at the 2009 NBA draft.
At the 2009 NBA Draft, at Madison Square Garden, the Knicks had just one pick because they traded two other picks away to the Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers. With the No. 8 overall draft pick, the Knicks selected Jordan Hill.
Hill hasn't been a complete bust in the NBA, but he only lasted one season for New York in which he played just 24 games. Just one pick before that, the Golden State Warriors selected Stephen Curry while the Los Angeles Clippers got Blake Griffin with the No. 1 overall pick. Now, the Knicks couldn't do anything about that considering they hadn't yet picked, but Knicks fans can't help but wonder what it would be like if Griffin or Curry had slipped to No. 8.
Just one pick after the Knicks, the Toronto Raptors selected DeMar DeRozan and then that was followed up by the Milwaukee Bucks drafting Brandon Jennings. DeRozan has been a good shooting guard for the Raptors, averaging 16.8 points per game in his young career. Jennings isn't an unbelievable player by any means, but he could have been a valuable piece for the Knicks.
The Atlanta Hawks chose Jeff Teague No. 19 overall. Teague is having an All-Star season, and he has increased his scoring average every single year. On top of that, Teague is averaging a career-high 7.5 assists per game this season and has the Hawks in first place. The Chicago Bulls got a good player in Taj Gibson, who has made 48 percent of his career shots from the field and is a great teammate.
Two other X factor players the Knicks passed on include Patrick Beverley and Danny Green, the latter being one of the best three-point shooters in the NBA and having played a huge role in the San Antonio Spurs' championship run last season. Three of the top seven leaders in three-pointers made this season came from the 2009 NBA draft.
A total of six players from the 2009 NBA Draft have been made an All-Star appearance, three of which were drafted after Hill. The Knicks are always looking to make big moves in free agency and by trades, but this is a perfect illustration of how they must improve their draft process.
