Facebook Apps, Search, Login & Mobile News 2015: Company to Create Virtual Reality Experience?
Facebook wants to head into the world of virtual reality. The company said Tuesday it was developing virtual reality versions of its apps, Fox News Tech reports.
Chris Cox, Facebook's product chief, made comments regarding Facebook's plans to go into virtual reality, but did not go into detail what the virtual reality experience would be like.
Cox said that virtual reality is "pretty cool" and that Facebook is indeed "working on apps for VR."
Cox mentioned that one Facebook user could share their virtual reality experience with their friend.
"You realize, when you're in it, that you're looking at the future, and it's going to be awesome," Cox said. "When you're in Facebook, you're just sending around these bits of experience -- a photo, a video, a thought," but with VR, he said, there'd be a chance of "sending a fuller picture."
Facebook creator Mark Zuckerburg added that sharing things on Facebook could change with virtual reality.
"Imagine sharing not just moments with your friends online, but entire experiences and adventures," Zuckerburg said, according to Time Magazine.
Facebook purchased virtual reality headset maker Oculus about a year ago. Plans for the unveiling of virtual reality for Facebook will take time though.
Facebook and Oculus VR teamed up to make a virtual reality movie using a new in-house studio. It is likely that Facebook wants to do more than just make their apps virtual reality compatible.
Facebook users are uploading and interacting with videos at a "record pace," Cox says. Cox hopes that those same users will be creating virtual reality content too.
"Totally. You'll do it, Beyoncé will do it," Cox said, referring to making and sharing virtual reality content.
Cox said that "we're a long way away from everyone having those headsets." At least it is something to look forward to.
