Afroman Arrested: 'Because I Got High' Rapper's Reps Blame 'Outside Uncontrolled Forces' for Video of Him Punching Female Fan During Concert [Watch]
Rapper Afroman allegedly punched a female fan during a performance. He was subsequently arrested by local police and then released on bail.
Afroman, whose real name is Joseph Edgar Foreman, was performing a concert at a locale called Kress Live in Biloxi, Mississippi, according to the Sun Herald. The rapper was placed under citizen arrest and was later released on a $300 bond.
"My understanding is (the woman) got up on stage, and he hit her," said Biloxi Police Chief John Miller.
Various videos were recorded of the incident, in which the fan goes on the stage and begins dancing behind Afroman as he plays guitar. Foreman notices someone behind him, turns and punches the fan. She falls to the floor and is helped by another concertgoer.
Afroman continued playing after the woman fell down. Police then arrested him outside the venue.
Joshua McLelland, another concertgoer, uploaded another video of the incident to Facebook.
Following his arrest, Afroman’s representative gave a statement to Billboard concerning what happened.
"This was a completely involuntary reflex reaction to people infringing on his stage space," the statement said. "It was uncharacteristic behavior that was initiated by outside uncontrolled forces."
Chase Taylor, owner of Kress Live where Afroman performed, gave WLOX his version of events and what happened following the alleged assault.
"Afroman was about five songs into his set when the incident occurred. We pulled the plug on him, and security met him at the bottom of the stage to escort him outside, where he was taken into custody,” Taylor said. "Kress Live does not condone this type of behavior. We like to keep a safe environment, and we addressed the situation the best way we could."
Afroman, 40, became famous because of his hit song “Because I Got High.” On his Facebook page the rapper did not address the issue directly, simply writing, “Because I didn’t get high.”
