NFL Draft 2015 Update: Marcus Mariota Gaining Attention, Jameis Winston Experiencing Weakness in Shoulder
Marcus Mariota has been getting a lot of attention in the scouting combine for the 2015 NFL Draft, while Jameis Winston is reportedly experiencing weakness in his shoulder.
Mariota, who is considered as one of the top prospects in the upcoming draft, admitted that he still has a lot to learn as a quarterback in the NFL, but the former Oregon standout believes he should be selected first overall this year.
Mariota admitted that he needs to learn how to call plays in a huddle, which is critical in the league, but he pointed out that quarterback coach Kevin O'Connell has been helping him a lot in the combine. Although he knows he has a lot of work to do before the 2015 NFL season, Mariota is still confident in his abilities as a quarterback.
"I've been able to, working with Kevin O'Connell and he's given me a play sheet, he's had me read the plays out loud, that's something little, but I think as this process goes, it's going to help me just speak it in the huddle," said Mariota, who threw 4,454 yards with 42 touchdowns last season. "It's new. I haven't done it since high school."
On the other hand, interested teams are also keeping an eye on Winston, but the former Florida State standout is reportedly experiencing weakness in his right shoulder -- his throwing shoulder.
According to ESPN, Winston underwent several examinations, which revealed the problem. Sources indicated that it might be caused by a nerve problem, which could be fixed by undergoing therapy.
But while the weakness in his shoulder is a cause for concern for several teams, Winston is not worried and is planning to prove his worth in the scouting combine.
"I got the same shoulder I done had the last two years at Florida State," Winston said via ESPN. "I had an MRI, just like everyone else. I've been playing football for, since I was 4 years old, and my shoulder has been fine."
Winston, who threw 3,907 yards with 25 touchdowns for the Seminoles last season, confirmed, though, that his job as a relief pitcher for Florida State's baseball team might have affected his throwing shoulder.
"I'm a quarterback, this is actually the first time I've ever just had an offseason just to work on being a quarterback, I've been playing baseball, I was a pitcher, that might be why the shoulder thing, but this is my first time having an offseason," Winston said.
Winston and Mariota are the top candidates for the first overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, which will happen from April 30 to May 2. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers own the first pick in the upcoming draft.
