Xbox One vs. PS4: Sony Projected to Continue Outselling Microsoft Through 2018
Microsoft consoles have evolved over the years, and though Xbox One consoles continue to drop in price, it may not be enough to draw some gamers. Some are sticking with the Playstation 4, and that trend could continue until 2018, according to ExtremeTech.
Strategy Analytics recently released a report on sales trends of the current generation game consoles. According to its findings, Sony will have sold 80 million PS4s by the end of 2018. That's compared to only 57 million Xbox Ones at the end of that same period.
Xbox One was able to outsell the PS4 for just two months, November and December 2014, but every other month, PS4 has dominated in sales.
Sony could be headed for similar success it had with the PS2, and Microsoft cannot be happy about this.
What Microsoft does have though is content. They have Halo, Gears of War and Tomb Raider at its disposal and need to lure more gamers with new titles.
Sony's PS4 just released The Order: 1886, and it is receiving poor reviews from critics. PS4 does not have many Sony-exclusive titles. Two upcoming games are Bloodborne and Uncharted 4.
Gamers just seem to prefer the PS4 hardware. The lack of games could create a problem in the future, but if Strategy Analytics predictions are correct, PS4 will continue to outsell Xbox One for at least the next three years.
Taking a distant third place is Nintendo's Wii U. By the end of 2018, Wii U is only expected to have sold between 15 and 20 million consoles. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U gave the console a brief excitement period, but gamers continued buying PS4s and Xbox Ones. Next up for Wii U is the release of The Legend of Zelda. That should help some new purchases of the console, but it will not get it anywhere near Microsoft or Sony.
