Lionel Messi Transfer Rumors: FC Barcelona Star Could Move to PSG
Lionel Messi is continuously being linked to a move out of Camp Nou, and former FC Barcelona defender Eric Abidal believes the superstar forward will be interested in moving to Paris Saint-Germain.
Abidal, who played alongside Messi for six seasons at FC Barcelona, believes there is a chance the Argentinian superstar will decide to leave Barca to take a new challenge in his career.
And for Abidal, who won six Spanish La Liga and two Champions League titles with Messi at Barca, Paris Saint-Germain is a strong candidate to land the four-time Ballon d'Or winner because PSG have been building a competitive team over the past several seasons.
"Perhaps he would like a different challenge, being able to win trophies with another club, that remains a possibility," Abidal told TF1 via ESPN FC, referring to Messi. "It's true that PSG have, for a while now, been able to put a good squad together, a good team with an attitude, a desire, a determination and objectives to be achieved."
Messi has been a subject of numerous transfer rumors over the past several weeks as reports revealed that he has a rocky relationship with FC Barcelona coach Luis Enrique.
In order to acquire Messi from Barcelona, any team will have to spend at least 250 million Euros, but top-tier teams in Europe have already expressed willingness to break the bank to get the 27-year-old.
Paris Saint-Germain have been chasing Messi since last summer and are still planning to bring the Argentina international to France.
PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi confirmed last week that they are interested in Messi - and even Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo - but he insisted that he will not try to acquire both superstars unless both Messi and Ronaldo express interest in moving out of their respective clubs.
"Messi and Ronaldo are at home in Barcelona and Madrid," Al Khelaifi said. "I respect these two clubs and I have good relations with their presidents. I respect them a lot. If we were interested in a player of one of these two clubs, I would speak about it to their president. Messi and Ronaldo are happy in their clubs. I respect that."
Messi, who is in contract with FC Barcelona until the end of the 2018 season, has already tallied 26 goals and 13 assists in 24 Spanish La Liga appearances this season.
