Android vs. Apple iPhone Market Share & Sales 2014: Windows Phone and BlackBerry Lag Behind Smartphone Devices Giants
Apple iOS and Android-powered smartphones dominate the smartphone market. According to IDC research, 96.3 percent of smartphone shipments are iOS or Android products.
In 2013, that number was at 93.8 percent for the calendar year and 95.6 percent for the fourth quarter of 2013.
Android smartphones owned an 81.5 percent share of the market during the 2014 year.
Demand for the new larger-screened iPhones gave Apple a record number of phones shipped in 2014, but Android still outpaces them in total market share. Apple's iOS smartphones increased their total shipments of smartphones from 153.4 million in 2013 to 192.7 million in 2014 but did see their share of the market decrease to 14.8 percent in 2014 from 15.1 in 2013.
In the fourth quarter of 2014, Apple saw its iOS devices grow in share from 17.5 percent to 19.7 percent.
Now that Apple has decided to match Android with big screen displays, demand could level off. However, Apple is expected to deliver a new iPhone some time in 2015. If the phone is successful and causes Android users to switch over, Apple could see its market share for 2015 get closer to that of Android devices.
Meanwhile, this year, Samsung plans at least one new Android phone, the Galaxy S6.
LG and HTC also plan to build some new phones this year.
Third place goes to Windows Phone. Windows Phones lag far behind in market share with only about three percent. 2014 brought some new Windows Phones and that helped the smartphones realize a 4.2 percent year-over-year change. 2015 will give Windows Phones an opportunity to catch up on some of that lag. This year, Windows 10 for Phones will be released, and several new Windows Phone models will be introduced.
BlackBerry phones are not enjoying any increases in market share. Year-over-year BlackBerry's share decreased by 69.8 percent in 2014.
