A California man has filed a lawsuit against Nestle Purina PetCare Co. because he believes the company's Purina Beneful dog food caused his dog's death and thousands of other dogs to become sick.

Reuters reported Frank Lucido says that all three of his dogs became sick after eating Purina Beneful dog food in January. One of his dogs died and a vet examination discovered signs of internal bleeding of the stomach and lesions on the dog's liver. Lucido says his two other dogs are still sick.

The suit, filed in federal court in San Francisco, says that all three of Lucido's dogs were healthy until he bought the Beneful dog food for the first time.

Lucido is not the only one making claims against the Beneful dog food; over 3,000 other people have logged complaints online about their dogs becoming sick or dying after eating Beneful dog food. In the online complaints, the dogs showed "consistent symptoms, including stomach and related internal bleeding, liver malfunction or failure, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, seizures, bloat, and kidney failure," the suit said.

Purina PetCare says the lawsuit is not valid.

"There are no product quality problems with Beneful," Schopp told the Business Journal according to Reuters.

In a statement, Purina responded to the lawsuit, according to NBC News.

"We believe the lawsuit is baseless, and we intend to vigorously defend ourselves and our brand," the statement read. "Beneful had two previous class action suits filed in recent years with similar baseless allegations, and both were dismissed by the courts."

The suit asks for anyone who has purchased Beneful dog food in the past four years and the food caused their dog to become sick or die to come forward and be part of the class-action lawsuit. The suit against Beneful says that the food has substances that are toxic to animals. Several Purina brands are also mentioned.

As part of the suit, there are claims that Purina is selling dog food without proper quality control and testing. The suit alleges that Purina is not properly investigating pet deaths and illnesses reported by Beneful customers.
