'Jane the Virgin' Star Gina Rodriguez Says All She Wants to Do Is 'Play a Superhero,' Has Had Many More Opportunities Since Golden Globes
In a recent interview with E! News, Golden Globe winning actress Gina Rodriguez revealed that she would love to play a superhero role in the future.
"I would love to be a superhero -- that's all I want to do is play a superhero," said Rodriguez. "And let's be real, I could kick some a**. We all know I could kick some a**."
E! News suggests that Rodriguez could be up for the running for the Captain Marvel female superhero character that will get her own movie in 2018. So far, no actress has been confirmed for the role, but Rodriguez's interest in playing a superhero might put her in the running.
Since winning a Golden Globe, Rodriguez admits that more acting opportunities have come her way.
"The opportunities become more abundant. People have been so wonderful," the "Jane the Virgin" star revealed. "The opportunities for Jane the Virgin have become more abundant. We're now in 32 different markets in over 28 countries. People are picking up on the show who didn't know about it before. It's very exciting."
Rodriguez's E! News interview comes on the heels of the controversial minority superhero comments made by fellow Latina actress Michelle Rodriguez.
On Friday, Feb. 27, Michelle Rodriguez made some controversial comments to TMZ about minority actors playing superhero roles.
TMZ caught up with the "Fast & Furious" actress and asked whether she was taking on the role of the Green Lantern, to which she replied no. She then continued her statement with expressing her belief that minorities shouldn't play white superheroes.
"That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard," Rodriguez said about playing the Green Lantern. "Because of this whole 'minorities in Hollywood' thing ... It's so stupid. Stop stealing all the white people's superheroes. Make up your own."
Rodriguez has since apologized for her comments following the backlash.
"I want to clarify about my comment yesterday. I stuck my foot in my mouth once again, and I said that people should stop trying to steal white people superheroes," Rodriguez said in a Facebook video. "I guess it got taken out of context because a lot of people got offended ... but I have a tendency to speak without a filter, so sorry about that."
