The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror films has announced its annual Saturn Award nominations, with "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Interstellar" leading the nominations.

The Academy is determined to award genre films that are not usually awarded by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science and the critics. However, sometimes the Saturn Awards choose prestige films and ignore some of the more important science fiction, fantasy and horror films of the year.

Disney's "Captain America" lead the nominees with 11 and scored nominations for Best Comic-Book to Film Release, Best Actor for Chris Evans, Best Supporting Actor for Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Mackie and Best Supporting Actress for Scarlett Johansson. The film also received nominations for Best Director and Best screenplay.

"Interstellar" scored 10 nominations, including Best Science Fiction film, Best Actor for Matthew McConaughy, Best Actress for Anne Hathaway and Best Supporting Actress for Jessica Chastain. Christopher Nolan scored a Best Director nomination while Hans Zimmer scored a Best Music nomination for their work in the Paramount film.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" also had an impressive showing, as it will compete against "Captain America" for Best Comic-book to Movie. The eight-time nominee was also nominated for Best Actor for Chris Pratt, Best Director for James Gunn and Best Screenplay.

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" followed with eight and was nominated for Best Science Fiction Film, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director and Best Visual Effects. "Edge of Tomorrow" and "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" each scored seven nominations. "Edge of Tomorrow" will compete in the Science Fiction category while "The Hobbit" will compete for Best Fantasy film.

A number of Oscar nominees landed surprising nominations. Best Picture winner "Birdman" scored a nomination for Best Fantasy Film, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress.

"Birdman" will compete with fellow Oscar nominee "The Grand Budapest Hotel" in the Fantasy category. The Wes Anderson film was also nominated for Best Young Actor, Best Screenplay and Best Production Design. Interestingly, though, the film scored no Best Actor or Best Director nominations.

Even more surprising was the inclusion of "The Imitation Game," which scored a Best Thriller nomination, but somehow did not qualify for any other category. The Morten Tyldum film will compete against fellow Oscar nominee "American Sniper," as well as "Gone Girl" and "Nightcrawler."

One of the biggest upsets in the nominations was "Snowpiercer." The critically acclaimed Science Fiction film landed a nomination in the Action/Adventure category but seemed to miss out on nominations for Best Actor for Chris Evan, Best Supporting Actress for Tilda Swinton, and even Best Director. The Independent Film most likely failed to score major nominations due to the lack of exposure and lack of a wide release. However, the lack of nominations is a disappointment given that the movie would have easily scored multiple wins.

Other films shunned from the awards included "Under the Skin" and "Enemy."

The Academy did offer some surprises as it nominated "Grand Piano," "I, Origins," "A Most Violent Year," "The One I Love," "The Two Faces of January," and "Whiplash" for Best Independent Film. However, only "Whiplash" qualified for other categories.

The awards will be presented on June 25 in Burbank.
