Tribeca Film Festival 2015: Films from Claudia Llosa, Oscar Isaac, and Mexico to Be Part of Spotlight Section
The Tribeca Film Festival has announced its Spotlight section, which seeks to showcase innovative storytelling, along with bold, new works from TFF alumni.
The festival section features a number of festival hits, star driven features and a number of Latin Americans. Among the Latinos being showcased are Claudia Llosa. The Lima, Peru-born director brings her follow-up to her Academy Award nominated film "The Milk of Sorrow." Her new film "Aloft" stars Jennifer Connelly and it tells the story of a struggling mother who encounters the son she abandoned 20 years earlier. The movie premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Golden Bear and it will be distributed by Sony Pictures Classics.
The Sundance Selection "Cartel Land" will make its New York Premiere at Tribeca after winning the Directing award at Sundance. The Mexican co-production is set in the 21st century, pitting vigilantes on both sides of the border against the vicious Mexican drug cartels. The movie was directed by Matthew Heineman and is set to be distributed by Orchard later this year.
Guatemalan actor Oscar Isaac returns to the Indie film in "Mojave." The movie tells the story of a suicidal artist who goes into the desert, where he finds his doppelgänger, a homicidal drifter. Isaac re-teams with Garrett Hedlund and also stars alongside Mark Wahlberg and Dominican actres and "The Sopranos" star Dania Ramirez. Oscar-winning writer William Monahan wrote and directed the film, which is having its world premiere.
Other high-profile films that will showcased include "Slow West" starring Michael Fassbender and Ben Mendelsohn. The film, which was acquired by A24, won the Grand Jury World Dramatic competition at Sundance and is directed by John Maclean.
Ken Loach's Cannes Competition film "Jimmy's Hall" returns to the festival circuit, a year after its world premiere while Venice Film Festival winner "Hungry Hearts" will open at Tribeca before making its theatrical release through Sundance Selects.
Paul Weitz's Sundance film "Grandma" will also make its New York premiere. Acquired by Sony Pictures Classics, the feature made headlines at Sundance and had Oscar buzz for Lily Tomlin's performance.
The Ethan Hawke starrer "Good Kill" will also return to the festival circuit after scoring rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival. The movie also stars January Jones and Zoe Kravitz.
Viggo Mortensen also returns to the Tribeca Film Festival in his first French film "Far From Men." The movie, which is being released by Tribeca Film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and has been a festival hit throughout.
Adrien Brody's latest film "Backtrack" will make its world premiere while Tim Blake Nelson's latest "Anesthesia" will also premiere. Other films that will be featured in the section include "Ashby" starring Emma Roberts, "The Cut" starring Tahar Rahim, and the Sundance selection "Sleeping with Other People."
The Tribeca Festival also announced its shorts selection and it includes nine sections. There will films showcased from Mexico, Argentina, USA, Sweden, Canada, Israel, France, England and Liberia.
The Tribeca Film Festival will take place from April 15 to 26 and will feature more than 100 features and shorts.
