This week's Android 5.0 Lollipop update release date news brings some good news to the HTC One and Sony Xperia Z device owners, and some bad news for users of pretty much every other Sony-built smartphone on the market.

Sony: Sorry, Xperia Z Devices Only

According to the official Sony Xperia twitter account this week, the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is "going to be released for the entire Xperia Z series." That would be a welcome piece of officially confirmed Android L news, if it wasn't a bummer, given the overall context of the exchange:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, everyone who didn't get a Sony Xperia Z series phone, but there you have it: No Lollipop for you, ever.

However, according to the IBTimes blog that spotted the tweet, Xperia Z owners should begin checking their devices for OTA updates now, as the highly expected-yet-barely-extant operating system update is apparently expected to be rolling out to the devices soon. The exception to the 'no Android L for Sony's mid-tier rule' is the Xperia M4 Aqua, which runs Lollipop natively, since it's brand new.

T-Mobile HTC One M7 OTA Update Officially Confirmed

In other Android Lollipop news, more seems to be happening -- or at least imminently about to happen -- in T-Mobile and HTC's neck of the Android community.

As we previously reported at the end of February, while the HTC One M8 on T-Mobile began getting Android L updates, HTC One M7 customers (non-developers) were feeling a little left in the dust, until some hints began appearing that the M7's time to shine was on the way. That time is now (or more specifically, this coming Tuesday, March 10).

That's the day HTC's Mo Versi said T-Mobile's HTC One M7 devices would begin receiving the OTA rollout of Android 5.0 Lollipop, as spotted by Android Central. After all the rumors and speculation, it's got to feel good for owners of the original "One" to have official confirmation.

By the way, Verizon, which took its time getting Android 5.0 out, has finally begun updating its HTC One M8 handsets beginning earlier this month, according to Android Police.

Given that some second-in-line devices for some carriers are officially getting the Android L update, it's safe to say that for the U.S., Android 5.0 is finally happening in many places and for many devices.
