During his promotional tour for his new film, "Gunman" on Saturday, Sean Penn revealed he has "absolutely no apologies" for his comment toward Mexican director, Alejandro González Iñárritu at this year's Oscars ceremony, The Associated Press reports.

According to the New York Daily News, Penn was the presenter for Best Picture at the Oscars last month, and when he discovered that Iñárritu won for his film, "Birdman," he said, "Who gave this son of a b*tch his green card?"

Following his comment, many critics and social media users slammed Penn's joke and described it as inappropriate. However Penn is now speaking out on the matter and saying he won't apologize and thinks his critics are stupid.

"I have absolutely no apologies," Penn said. "In fact, I have a big (expletive) you for every -- anybody who is so stupid not to have gotten the irony when you've got a country that is so xenophobic. If they had their way, you wouldn't have great filmmakers like Alejandro working in this country. Thank god we do."

At the time the comment was made, Iñárritu said he was not bothered by Penn's controversial joke, the New York Daily News reports.

"I found it hilarious," Iñárritu said backstage. "You know, Sean and I have that kind of brutal relation where only true friendship can survive."

Iñárritu explained he previously worked with Penn on the film, "21 Grams," and it was there the two developed their friendship.

"When I was directing him in '21 Grams,' he was always making jokes about that, and I make on him a lot of very tough jokes that I will not tell you. Anyway, we have that kind of relation, of old friendship. I didn't find it offensive. I think it was very funny, in my personal view."
