Apple announced a new version of the MacBook with Retina display at its Monday event in San Francisco, California, reports TIME.

The new 12-inch MacBook is the lightest and thinnest notebook ever made by the tech giant. It weighs in at two pounds. It is 13.1 millimeters at its thickest point. The device is 24 percent thinner than the 11-inch MacBook Air.

"Can you even see it?" CEO Tim Cook joked as he walked on stage touting the new MacBook.

The new MacBook Pro's high-resolution Retina display packs over 4 million pixels on the 13‑inch model and more than 5 million pixels on the 15‑inch model. Human eyes cannot discern the individual pixels, according to Apple. Images have a new level of realism. The 2560x1600 resolution on the 13‑inch MacBook Pro and 2880x1800 resolution on the 15‑inch MacBook Pro make text so sharp users will feel like they are reading text on a printed page.

By comparison, the 13‑inch MacBook Pro with Retina display has nearly 2 million more pixels than an HDTV.

Glare reduction and increased sharpness are additional perks of the Retina display. The high contrast ratio results in blacker blacks, whiter whites and all colors of the spectrum are vibrant. Thanks to IPS technology, users enjoy a 178-degree view of everything on the screen from nearly any angle.

"We challenged ourselves to reinvent the notebook. And we did it," Cook said.

The Force Touch trackpad allows gestures like swiping or pinching to switch between apps and navigate content.

The machine will have one connector, called USB-C, to provide power, device connectivity and video output.

Marketing Chief Phil Schiller said the new MacBook Pro represents the company's vision for future notebooks. On stage, he referred to it as "the world's most energy efficient laptop."

The new notebook will be sold in three colors: "space grey," silver and gold.

The base model MacBook comes with a 1.1 Ghz dual-core Intel Core M processor, Intel HD 3500 graphics, 8GB of memory, and a 256GB SSD hard drive. It has a retail price of $1,299.

A $1,599 model will be available with a faster processor and more storage space.

The MacBook Pro with Retina display will start shipping April 10.
