PSG vs. Chelsea, Bayern Munich vs. Shakhtar Donetsk Previews, Results: Where to Watch UCL Round of 16 Second Legs
The Champions League returns on Wednesday in two suspenseful matches.
In the first game of the day is Bayern Munich's clash with Shakhtar Donetsk. In that opening game in Ukraine, the Bavarian side obtained a red card to midfield maestro Xabi Alonso and had to settle for a 0-0 draw. Now the onus is on the team to figure out how to defeat a team that did its utmost to shut down Bayern's passing system. It will certainly make for a unique game as this is the first time in three games that Bayern enters a match without a decisive advantage. In 2013, the team had a 3-1 lead on Arsenal before losing 2-0 at home. A year ago the team held a 2-0 advantage on Arsenal before enduring a draw.
For Shakhtar, this is a sign of hope. Bayern's track record at home in these second legs of the round of 16 might give the side confidence that it can complete an upset. Of course, Bayern will be looking for blood knowing that anything else, even a 1-1 draw, is an elimination from a tournament that is very winnable.
The second game of the day may give people even more to fawn over. With the score tied at 1-1 after the first leg in Paris, PSG and Chelsea will battle to decide this draw. A year ago, Chelsea lost 3-1 in France but responded with a 2-0 win at home; the away goal wound up being the difference in that tie.
This year, Chelsea also has the much-needed away goal and can afford to go for a conservative approach and a 0-0 draw. However, the English side was flatfooted throughout most of the first leg and was bailed out by the goaltending heroics of Thibaut Courtois. If the team opts to sit back, then it will have to endure a similar attack from a confident Paris side that has not lost since Jan. 10, a span of 14 games.
Predictions
Bayern manages a 3-0 win at home while PSG upsets Chelsea with a 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge.
