NFL Trade Updates 2015: New York Jets Acquire Ryan Fitzpatrick, Philadelphia Eagles Get Sam Bradford
The New York Jets acquired quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in a trade with the Houston Texans, NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Wednesday.
According to Schefter, the Jets got Fitzpatrick in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, which could also turn into a sixth-round pick depending on how much playing time the veteran quarterback will get in New York in the 2015 NFL season.
Fitzpatrick, who signed two-year deal worth $7.25 million with the Texans in March last year, started 12 games in Houston last season, where he completed 63.1 of his passes for 2,483 yards and 17 touchdown passes against eight interceptions.
The 32-year-old quarterback went 4-5 in his first nine starts and was replaced by Ryan Mallett. The Texans started him three more times and set a franchise record when he threw six touchdown passes in the first of those three games, but his season ended when he suffered a broken leg.
Fitzpatrick, who is scheduled to get $3.25 million in the final year of his deal, became a dispensable asset for the Texans after the team signed Mallett to a two-year deal worth $7 million. The Texans are also expected to sign former Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer to a two-year, $10.5 million deal once physicals are completed.
Fitzpatrick will have the opportunity to start for the Jets next season. Geno Smith started in 14 games for the Jets last season, completing 59.7 percent of his passes for 2,525 yards and 13 touchdowns. New coach Todd Bowles has been mum on whether or not Smith will still start for the team next season.
Meanwhile, Schefter also revealed on Tuesday that the St. Louis rams will send Sam Bradford to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Nick Foles. The Rams also acquired a 2015 fourth-round pick and 2016 second-round pick from the Eagles, who also got a 2015 fifth-round pick in the deal.
The Eagles could also get a 2016 fourth-round pick if Bradford plays less than 50 percent of snaps next season or a third-round pick if the 27-year-old will not be able to play at all. Bradford missed the entire 2014 NFL season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee.
