Ten Los Angeles high school students were arrested on Friday for sexual assault going back to December 2013. 

Police arrested students in connection with sexual assaults and unlawful sex acts against two fellow students. The students are from Venice High School. Four more are expected to be arrested in connection with the assaults.

Investigators became aware of the situation after administrators from the school reported a possible sexual assault in the school.

During the course of the initial investigation, police found that two female students had been sexually assaulted between December 2013 and March 2015. The assaults were found to occur both on and off campus.

The male suspects are between the ages 14 and 17 and are current or former students at the high school. Eight suspects were arrested at the school, a ninth taken in off campus and the 10th turned himself in.

The suspected attacks are believed to have happened recently. Some of the assaults were outright sexual assault, say police, while others were categorized unlawful sex acts. Some of the incidences of assault were forced, and others were consensual but with victims deemed too young to consent. 

Los Angeles police Commander Andrew Smith said, "Incidents like this are a terrible tragedy." 

Regarding additional victims he said, "We'd ask them to come forward."

Police say there is physical evidence but have not disclosed what that includes as of now.

The suspects' names are not being disclosed due to their young age.

Police added the victims knew a majority of the perpetrators. 

"This is a painful moment for Venice High School, and this district," Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Ramon Cortines said in a statement. "I want you to know that no sexual misconduct of any kind by students or staff will ever be tolerated in LA Unified."
