'Batman vs. Superman' Movie News, Plot & Cast: 'The Walking Dead' Writer Says DC Movie Seem 'Derivative' After 'The Avengers'
Although the movie still is a year away from release, some have already began commenting on the project set to rival the continued success of Marvel movies.
"The Walking Dead" writer producer Robert Kirkman gave his opinion on the upcoming DC Comics movie.
Kirkman was speaking with Entertainment Weekly on the "Walking Dead" companion series when he was asked his opinion on the upcoming "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" movie, even if it was not a favorable opinion.
"I'm going to get in trouble here ... Anyone would be foolish to think that Marvel hasn't done something extremely special. I think of 'Iron Man' ending with a surprise cameo from Samuel L. Jackson [mentioning] 'The Avengers' -- you were like, 'What?! How did that happen?!'" he explained. "People forget that was a surprise. Everything that came out of that was very organic and very exciting."
However, since Marvel has already done it, DC's attempt, with the upcoming movie falls flat. Marvel, after all, brought its heroes together first.
"I think [DC] announcing you're going to do a 'Justice League' movie after a 'Superman' movie, that was neat and had some awesome things in it, but it wasn't like amazing or groundbreaking -- I shouldn't have said that. It was an awesome movie, I like it," he said. "[The plan] just seems derivative, so it puts them in a backseat position to Marvel. It's not organic so there's going to be so much scrutiny on 'Batman vs. Superman' when it comes out.
"It's got an uphill battle. If they hadn't told anybody if the Justice League were going to [be] appearing in that, and they were forming that, it would have been surprising and exciting and weird. People are forgetting how important the surprise is. But, you know, 'Aquaman' looks awesome and I'm sure it will be great," he added at the end.
However, Warner Bros, which is making the film, promises something exciting. The studio's CEO, Kevin Tsujihara, said he does not believe audiences are tired of superhero movies and that Marvel and DC are different, according to Variety.
"The worlds of DC are very different," he said. "They're steeped in realism, and they're a little bit edgier than Marvel's movies."
Whether it will be edgier or different is too early to tell.
