NBA Free Agents 2015 Rumors: Miami Heat Should Keep Goran Dragic, Says Dwyane Wade
Miami Heat superstar Dwyane Wade said that he would love to continue playing with Goran Dragic in years to come, saying that his team should re-sign the starting point guard after the 2014-15 NBA season.
Dragic, who was acquired by the Heat in a deal with the Phoenix Suns before the trade deadline last month, will become an unrestricted free agent after the current season.
The 28-year-old point guard is expected to receive attractive offers from other teams in the offseason. But if he will have it his way, Wade said that he will make sure to keep Dragic in Miami, calling the seven-year veteran "a good fit" to their team based on the 11 games in which the point guard played.
"I think he fits with what we want to build and what we want to do in the future," Wade said of Dragic, who averaged 16.7 points and 5.3 assists since the trade. "Personality-wise, I think he fits. I believe so, but that's not my call. But I know the front office did a great job doing their homework before they made the move and they wouldn't have made it if they didn't think he was a long-term fit for us."
The Heat have been very conscious about their cap room over the past several years and it remains to be seen whether or not team president Pat Riley will be willing to break the bank for Dragic.
Dragic, who won the Most Improved Player award and an All-NBA Third Team member last year after averaging 20.3 points and 5.9 assists, will reportedly command a deal where he could get a yearly salary of $17-20 million. Signing Dragic to such deal will give them lesser room to make a run at big-name free agents in the summer of 2016.
Earlier this month, Dragic told Bleacher Report that he is focused on helping the Heat this season. When pressed to talk about his future, he said that he will take a look at all options in the offseason, but also added that he will strongly consider staying with the Heat.
"I just want to be focused on trying to help the team as much as possible get to the playoffs," Dragic said. "But at the end of the season, of course I'm going to think about that option of staying. I'm really hoping to stay in Miami because I really like it, but you never know. I'm a free agent, so I'm going to explore my options."
