'Empire' Season 2 Finale Spoilers, News: Jussie Smollet Talks Jamal's Future
Everybody’s got their eyes on "Empire," the Terrence Howard-starring Fox drama that centers around the successes and struggles of an ex-drug dealer-turned-Hip Hop mogul named Lucious Lyon.
Lyon, who has reached the top of the game, has some massive control issues that threaten to destroy everything he has built.
In its first season, the show bravely and stylistically entertained its growing fan base while exploring deep subjects such as homophobia, terminal illness and the underlying causes of family dysfunction.
Jussie Smollett, who plays the breakout character Jamal Lyon, the gay son of the Empire CEO, talks about the future of his character’s relationship with his father.
In an interview in TVLine, Smollett said: “Lucious is not going to be okay with who Jamal is, but he is going to be put into a place where he is forced to respect his son, and to see that his son is a lot more like him — minus his sexuality. But listen… did we think that Lucious was suddenly going to wake up and be Gandhi? It’s not happening right now, but he is getting to a place, and you’ll see it. And you’ll be proud of Jamal and you’ll also be proud of the strides that he makes. It’s growth, that’s what it is.”
There is speculation that in the next season of "Empire" Jamal will take control of his father’s company. About this possibility Smollett is quiet.
But he does talk about power of his character.
“In my opinion, as an actor, Jamal is all about these bold subtleties of strength. He snaps back at his father, but still in a very grown-man way,” says Smollett.
“He’s standing his ground," the 31-year-old actor goes on to say. "He’s not afraid of Lucious, and that speaks volumes as to the man that he is and about the man that he’s becoming.”
And that's a good thing too, because there is a good chance his character will be shaken up in the series finale.
According to the spoiler chat on E! Online, Anika, Lucious's jilted ex, will end up doing something "with and/or to one of the three sons" that will shock everyone.
"She is really going to come back with a vengeance," said Grace Gealey, the actress who plays Anika. "There's nothing that she's really going to be afraid to do at this point."
Speaking to the Huffington Post the 30-year-old explained that, "For the finale, everyone is at their climactic moment, so every scene that you see will be like the total height of what it's supposed to be at that point. So it's going to be a doozy."
The two-hour season finale will air on Wednesday, 8/7c.
