Seattle Seahawks Earthquake: Century Link Field Breaks Noise Record, Registers Quake During Monday Night Game
Seattle's CenturyLink Field is known as arguably the loudest football stadium in the NFL, but Monday night there was even more proof to back it up.
The fans roared so loud that they registered in at 137.6 decibels of sound during the second quarter of the game, the team's website reported. The record-breaking mark beat out the 137.5 reading that was recorded at the Kansas City Chiefs' game against the Oakland Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium.
According to The Seattle Times, the fans in the stadium caused a magnitude 1 or 2 earthquake after the entire place erupted in celebration following a fumble return for a touchdown during the game.
"The University of Washington has a seismometer in a warehouse about a block south of CenturyLink Field, says Professor John Vidale. "The earthquake-like vibration can be seen in the blue wave in this graphic.
The Seahawks were enjoying the noise as the Saints offense struggled to stay in the game. Seattle ran away with a 34-7 blowout victory and totally kept Drew Brees and the Saints' offense in check.
"We took one in the chin today," Brees said after the game. "We got outplayed today. They played great. They made a lot of plays, and we didn't."
Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson played a big part in his team's victory, tossing three touchdowns while completing 22 of his 30 pass attempts. His offensive line also only allowed one sack in the entire game.
"For us to come out in that fashion and to win that game the way that we did was awesome," Wilson said.
The Seahawks clinched a playoff berth -- but even better yet -- now have home field advantage all but wrapped up. The team has a multiple game lead over any other teams contending for home field with only four more weeks to go in the season.
