Ryan Gosling & Eva Mendes Relationship, Marriage News: Couple Reacts to Backlash About Sweatpants Being the No. 1 Cause of Divorce
New mother Eva Mendes sat down with "Extra" on Wednesday to talk about her 6-month-old daughter Esmeralda Amada and motherhood. Little did she know the interview would lead to a social media backlash.
The trouble came when the 41-year-old actress revealed the secret to keeping her partner and Hollywood leading man, Ryan Gosling, happy at home.
"You can't do sweatpants. ... Ladies, No. 1 cause of divorce in America, sweatpants, no!" Mendes told "Extra" host AJ Calloway.
What happened next was a cataclysmic Twitter backlash. Some people were upset with Mendes while others questioned if Gosling was really that superficial.
Here are a few of the Twitter comments.
Twitter users favorited this tweet by @gracehelbig a whopping 2,116 times: "Eva Mendes says the #1 cause of divorce in America is sweatpants. Couldn't hear the rest bc my pleather-husband-keeping-thong was squeaking."
@august2014momma tweeted, "Lmao really? @evamendes honey if he's gonna leave you for wearing sweatpants, he was probably gonna leave you anyway."
@annetdonahue tweeted, "Eva Mendes says sweatpants are the number one cause of divorce which I think is another way of saying "I don't know how divorce works."
The 34-year-old "Only God Forgives" actor took to Twitter on Thursday to gallantly defend his baby's mother. He tweeted," Obviously sweatpants thing was a joke. Wearing them now. That's right, tweeting in sweatpants. Rats! Said too much! You win again Twitter."
The actress reacted as well by posting a picture of her favorite sweatpants on Instagram with the message, "Dear favorite pair of sweatpants. I was just kidding when I said you're the #1 cause of divorce. Everyone knows that orange crocs are the #1 cause of divorce. Either way it was a bad joke and feel terrible if you or anyone thought I was serious. Thanks for understanding sweatpants. Sorry orange crocs."
The "Lost River" starlet has given women of the world something to be very happy about -- she has launched a new makeup line, CIRCA, with Maesa, a beauty manufacturer that pairs brands with high-profile ambassadors. The beauty products are roughly $15 or less each, which certainly will be of help to women on a budget.
