Mexican wrestler Hijo del Perro Aguayo, who died early Saturday morning from injuries suffered during a wrestling match in Tijuana last Friday night, has been laid to rest.

The death of the popular wrestler, who was also known as Pedro Aguayo Ramirez, has devastated the lucha libre community.

The ceremony was held in Guadalajara.

Since the untimely death of the beloved “free fight” entertainer there have been reports of death threats made to Rey Mysterio Jr. (Oscar Gutierrez), the wrestler whose fly-kick is directly linked to Aguayo’s death.

Fans, as well as fellow wrestlers and family members, traveled to Guadalajara to pay their respects to Aguayo.

Aguayo’s family has been visibly shaken by their loss. Aguayo’s father, the legendary Mexican wrestler Pedro Aguayo Ramirez, an inductee into the Aztec Lucha Hall of Fame, refused to speak to the media at the funeral.

Aguayo’s mother has released a statement in which she questioned the medical treatment that her son received after the incident.

Paramedics treated Aguayo in the ring before taking him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The Tijuana Wrestling and Boxing Commission have stated that the incident was “unfortunate,” but that they are satisfied with the manner in which the medical staff responded to the situation.

As reported in the Independent, the state prosecutor’s office has announced that the cause of death was trauma to the neck and a cervical fracture.

They have now opened up an investigation into possible manslaughter.

Thirty-five-year-old Aguayo had been wrestling in Mexico’s “Lucha Libre” circuit for more than 20 years and had won a number of national, as well as tag team titles.

“My sincerest condolences for the Aguayo Ramirez family," wrote Joaquin Roldan, the director of the AAA wrestling federation, on his Twitter account.

“I have no words for this terrible news,” wrote Roldan.
