'Star Wars: Rogue One News 2015: John Williams Will Not Score Movie
In a historic first, John Williams will not score a major "Star Wars" film.
The award-winning composer is taking a break from work and will not partake in many upcoming projects, including "Star wars: Rogue One."
The standalone "Star Wars" film, set to be released on Dec. 16, 2016, will not have Williams as its composer but Alexandre Desplat, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Desplat announced he would write the score of "Rogue One" in an interview with a French radio station.
"When I saw Gareth Edwards' first film, which was called Monsters, I was really blown away by his talent and so I immediately agreed [to compose the score for Godzilla]," he said in the interview. "And the good news is that we are going to do another movie together very soon, which is a spinoff of Star Wars. So that is very, very exciting."
Desplat won an Academy Award for his "Grand Budapest Hotel" score and has previously worked with Gareth Edwards, who is directing "Rogue One."
During the interview, Desplat said Williams was an inspiration and influenced his decision to become a composer. Williams' iconic "Star Wars" score won a Golden Globe in 1977 and a Grammy in 1978.
Williams' break from work has also affected other movies, including Steven Spielberg's upcoming "Bridge of Spies," reports Billboard. Williams has scored all Spielberg films except for "The Color Purple."
"John Williams' schedule was interrupted and he was unavailable to score the film due to a minor health issue, now corrected," DreamWorks studios said in a statement.
Thomas Newman, who scored "American Beauty" and "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," has replaced him.
Disney announced the release of the standalone "Star Wars" movie "Rogue One" earlier this month. Aside from Edwards, Chris Weitz will also work in "Rogue One" as writer and Felicity Jones has been the first actor contracted for a role in the movie.
In the statement, Disney said the movie has started filming.
Although he will not score this movie, Williams will work in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which will be released at the end of this year.
