Mateus Ward has auditioned for the role of Spider-Man for one of Marvel's upcoming film projects.

According to previous reports, the iconic superhero is slated to make an appearance in the forthcoming "Captain America: Civil War." The film is set to enter production in a few weeks, meaning that casting must happen as soon as possible.

The news is rather unique as Mateus is only 16. This would indicate that Marvel's age range for the role is younger than any other iteration of the character onscreen. The iconic superhero was previously portrayed by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in two completely different interpretations.

When Maguire first appeared as the wall-crawling web-slinger back in 2002, he was 26 years old. He appeared in two sequels, which were released in 2004 and 2007. After the third Spider-Man film, production studio Sony decided to reboot the franchise and brought Garfield on to play Peter Parker. Garfield was 28 when his first appearance as Spider-Man bowed in movie theaters. He appeared in a sequel last year that was met poorly by critics and was also the lowest grossing film in the franchise.

As a result, it seems that Sony and Marvel came to an agreement to allow the superhero to appear in the Marvel Universe. The superhero is slated to have his own standalone film in 2017.

Ward's audition was apparently held in a house to keep the process secret. There are no guarantees that he will earn the role.

Ward has appeared in a number of TV series including "Weeds," "Criminal Minds," "Lab Rats," "Hostages," "NCIS," "Murder in the First" and "Parenthood." He has also appeared in a number of short projects including "Devils Eyes," "House Painting," "Wayward Frankenstein" and "Monstrum." He is currently slated to appear in "William Fronte," a horror film directed by Natalie Bible'.
