'Saved by the Bell' Screech Actor Dustin Diamond Threatened to Stab Bargoer Before Actually Stabbing Another Man, Say Prosecutors
Prosecutors say that Dustin Diamond, the actor best known for playing Samuel "Screech" Powers on the '90s sitcom "Saved by the Bell," threatened to stab a man on the same night that he allegedly stabbed another man at a Wisconsin bar back in December.
The 38-year-old actor was taken into custody on Dec. 26, 2014 by police in Ozaukee County for allegedly stabbing a man with a switchblade during a fight at the Grand Avenue Saloon fight in Port Washington on Christmas night. He has been charged with reckless endangerment of safety, disorderly conduct and carrying a concealed weapon. Diamond, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges, faces up to 10 years behind bars if convicted. His trial is set to begin on May 27, reports Fox 6 Now.
A criminal complaint states that Diamond and his fiancée, Amanda Schutz, 27, got into a physical altercation with two men and a woman. Court documents show the victim suffered from a non-life-threatening, 1/2-inch wound under his armpit and heavy bleeding. However, Diamond told police he accidentally stabbed one of the men while trying to defend his fiancée.
Earlier this month, Ozaukee County District Attorney Adam Gerol motioned to introduce the claim that Diamond tried to force another man to chug a bottle of Smirnoff earlier that night at Patio Bar & Grill, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. However, after the man refused to participate in Diamond's challenge, which is a widely known frat-style prank, he allegedly said: "Don't make me stab someone on Christmas."
Diamond's lawyer, Thomas Alberti, dismissed the allegation, saying the man, Paul Rogers, and his brothers were intoxicated at the time. He also accused the men of changing up their story. In addition, Alberti described the incident as a "misunderstanding" over Diamond's friendly drink offer.
A judge will hold a hearing on the motions on April 2.
