PBS 'Downton Abbey' Cast & News: Will a Movie Follow Final Sixth Season?
Fans all over the world were distraught to hear "Downton Abbey," one of the most popular dramas in British television history, was ending after the upcoming season. However, there could be a possibility of fans getting a movie to wrap up the show.
In an interview with Deadline, executive producer Gareth Neame suggested the possibility that the Crawley family and their servants may get one last appearance after season six. When asked about the possibility of a movie, Neame laughed.
"I hadn't thought of that," he said laughing after the show was compared to "Community." "Six seasons and a movie, that's not bad."
Talking with The Hollywood Reporter, Neame reiterated that he and Julian Fellowes, the show's creator, would not be opposed to the movie idea.
"We would be interested. It's something that Julian and I have been contemplating and would be a wonderful extension," he said. "But it would be wrong to say there are any plans. There is nothing firmly in place."
He explained that once filming for season six is over, they could shift focus to the possibility of a movie.
"We'll see, there are all sorts of ideas. I'm not worried, I think we will find an amazing story for a 'Downton' movie, but that is all for the future," he explained.
Concerning the decision to end the show, Neame told the Hollywood Reporter neither he nor Fellowes had been pressured by ITV or PBS to keep the popular costume drama going, but rather it had been a practical decision.
"If we had gone on for three more years, we might have found ourselves in the position where half of the actors wanted to stay in the show and half didn't," he said, explaining the difference between a show set with coworkers rather than a family. Family can only leave through death or divorce.
"So it was very important that we retained the family ensemble together, and I think if we'd gone on for years and some people had gone and some people hadn't, it wouldn't have felt right," he explained.
