‘Secrets and Lies’ Season 1 Episode 7 ‘The Cop’ Spoilers: Ben Confronts Arthur, Detective Cornell is Allegedly Abusing Her Authority
In Sunday's Episode 6, "The Confession," of "Secrets and Lies," Ben was locked inside his car in the real estate office's parking garage and faced his mysterious stalker who said, "I know who you are, and I know you killed Tom. And that's how I know you're going to confess before I'm through."
Ben escaped the car through a broken window. He agreed to get a security detail for his wife and kids, but not himself. He slept at Dave's place to keep the Christy and the girls out of harm's way in case the stalker showed up.
Although the episode's title hinted there would be a confession, by the end of the hour, we were no closer to knowing who killed Tom than before, but we did learn who's been making Ben's life a living hell for the last week.
Ben discovered that Kevin, who served in a war and worked for the State Department, is responsible for the death threats. Ben was outside Dave's house chasing down an upset Jess when Kevin showed up, held a gun to Ben's head and forced him into his car trunk.
Kevin took Ben to an abandoned warehouse where he used military torture tactics on him, including terrible screamo music. Kevin revealed that he knows Ben cheated on Christy with Jess six years ago, and the infidelity reminds him of when his wife cheated on him.
Later, Kevin took Ben into the woods where he demanded Ben dig the soil with his hands until he confesses to killing Tom. Ben knocked Kevin out, tried to call to 911 and ran. Kevin caught up with Ben and threatened to shoot him. Detective Cornell arrived just in time to save Ben. Kevin was placed in police custody.
Ben, out of sorts, returned to Dave's where he said he's ashamed of how he's reacted to Tom's murder.
Later, journalist Arthur Fenton sent Ben an e-mail containing a news article with the headline: "The family: What are they hiding?" along with a photo of Christy, Natalie and Abby.
In "Secrets and Lies" Episode 7, "The Cop," Ben is compelled to visit Arthur's home and punch him in the face more than once. He discovers an entire wall in Arthur's home that is decorated with news clippings of Detective Cornell. "I'm after Cornell," Arthur says. "And I need your help."
Ben does some investigation into Cornell and talks to a prison inmate. Evidence is mounting that the detective is abusing her authority. Ben plans to turn the tables on her with Arthur's help, but an anonymous tip places him as the prime suspect again.
