'Saved by the Bell' Dustin 'Screech' Diamond Trial News: Judge Denies Prosecution Motion to Introduce 'Other Acts' Evidence in Wisconsin Bar Stabbing Case
A judged denied prosecutors' request to enter evidence that Dustin Diamond -- the actor who played Samuel "Screech" Powers on the '90s sitcom "Saved by the Bell" -- threatened to stab a man on the same night he allegedly stabbed another man at a Wisconsin bar.
The 38-year-old former child star was taken into custody on Dec. 26, 2014 by police in Ozaukee County for allegedly stabbing a man with a switchblade during a fight at the Grand Avenue Saloon in Port Washington on Christmas night. He was charged with reckless endangerment of safety, disorderly conduct and carrying a concealed weapon. Diamond, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, faces up to 10 years behind bars if convicted.
Last month, Ozaukee County District Attorney Adam Gerol motioned to introduce the claim that Diamond tried to force another man to chug a bottle of Smirnoff earlier that night at Patio Bar & Grill, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. However, after the man refused to participate in Diamond's challenge, he allegedly said: "Don't make me stab someone on Christmas."
On Thursday, an Ozaukee County Circuit Judge Paul V. Malloy denied the prosecution's motion to include the claim as "other acts" evidence in Diamond's upcoming trial, reports the Journal Sentinel.
There was also a discussion about jury questionnaires, which will be mailed out by the court by April 17, reports Fox 6 Now.
Diamond's next court appearance is scheduled for May 11. Meanwhile, his jury trial is set to begin on May 27.
According to a criminal complaint, Diamond and his fiancée Amanda Schutz, 27, got into a physical altercation with two men and a woman. Court documents show the victim suffered from a non-life-threatening, 1/2-inch wound under his armpit and heavy bleeding. However, Diamond told police he accidentally stabbed one of the men while trying to defend his fiancée.
