Five Night at Freddy's News: Warner Bros. Planning 'Insane, Terrifying and Weirdly Adorable' Movie Based Off Game
Warner Bros. has purchased the rights to Five Nights at Freddy's, the popular video game series created by Scott Cawthon, to make a movie, reports Hollywood Reporter.
The game and upcoming movie's storyline takes place in Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a creepy version of Chuck E. Cheese, where an animatronic animal band performs children's songs by day and murderous rampages by night.
Cawthon created Five Nights at Freddy's in 2014 as a point-and-click survival horror video game. In the game, the player acts as a night security guard working five nights at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. The player must defend against the malfunctioning animatronics by monitoring their movement inside the pizzeria using security cameras, knowing that at any moment the death machines could jump out of the darkness and attack.
The feature adaptation, which is rumored to be a horror movie, will be produced by Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, who produced the Poltergeist remake due for release May 22, as well as Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg of KatzSmith Productions.
"We're looking forward to working with Scott to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie," Grahame-Smith told Hollywood Reporter.
There are three entries in the Five Nights at Freddy's game series. Fans of the wildly popular games claim that gameplay produces a feeling of "brutal tension." The terrifying experience for gamers is trying to save themselves from an animatronic's single jump scare that ends the game.
The game's atmosphere emphasizes the fear and suspense of an approaching threat, rather than the arrival of the threat, which makes it perfect for the horror movie genre.
"The story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to," said Cawthon.
The "Five Nights at Freddy's" film project is currently in the hands of writers.
