Twitter Trends, Topics and Hashtags of 2013: One Direction, Lea Michele Among This Year's Most Tweeted
One Direction dominates something other than their album charts this year -- social network Twitter has released the top trends of 2013 and the British boy band is among this year's most tweeted.
Three of the five most retweeted messages of the year were posted by members of One Direction, with Harry Styles (@Harry_Styles) being the most popular of all. Ever since the band came in third on The X Factor (U.K.) back in 2010, Styles has piled up a massive 18.1 million followers.
When Niall Horan (@NiallOfficial) tweeted "Yesss ! I'm 20 ! Woohoo ! No more teens!" he celebrated his 20th birthday with 275,000 retweets, while his bandmate Zayn Malik (@zaynmalik) scored up to 344,000 after posting a picture of Styles sleeping. Another from Malik received 336,000 retweets, when he tweeted to his followers, thanking for their kind messages following his engagement to Little Mix's Perrie Edwards.
"Never been more happy in my life !" he wrote. "Thank you to everyone that has been so lovely about my engagement to beautiful fiancé ! Big love z X."
When the five members' personal profiles and the official One Direction account (@onedirection) are added up altogether, the group has over 29 million followers.
However, the most popular tweet of the year came from Glee star Lea Michele (@msleamichele), who received 408,000 retweets after thanking her fans for their support following the death of her co-star and partner Corey Monteith in July.
"Corey will be forever in my heart," Michele tweeted.
Similarly, when "Fast & Furious" star Paul Walker (@RealPaulWalker) was killed in a Los Angeles car crash Nov. 30, a message shared from his official account peaked at 400,000 retweets: "It's with a heavy heart that we must confirm Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident."
