Jawbone UP3: After Delays, New Fitness Band will Finally Ship with Less Water Resistance
Jawbone announced a new fitness band back in November, the UP3.
Because of delays with the new sensors, customers were unaware of when they would finally receive the UP3, MacRumors reports.
The company allowed for pre-orders several months ago, but would not release a ship date. Friday, Jawbone finally said that the UP3 would start shipping April 20, according to a blog post, in the same order as the pre-orders were received.
Based on the number of pre-orders, Jawbone expects all UP3 devices to be received no later than mid-May.
Jawbone says that the new UP3 will have several new sensors that will improve the band. The device has the new tri-axis accelerometer, skin and ambient temperature sensors, and "bioimpedence" sensors that will allow the UP3 to analyze data such as heart rate. It will also be able to determine the quality of sleep that users are getting, measuring REM, light and deep sleep. The UP3 will be able to distinguish different activities that a user is performing.
Jawbone's blog post apologizes to customers for the delay in shipping and also explains the new water resistance. Originally, the device was set to be water resistant up to 10 meters, but now it can no longer make that guarantee, saying it will be able to be used in the shower and can sustain an everyday splash, but not submerged in water or used when swimming.
Jawbone is offering customers the option to cancel their pre-order if they are unhappy with this change.
The UP3 will cost $179.99 and is available for pre-order through Jawbone's website. Orders placed today will arrive by the end of May after the earlier pre-orders have been shipped.
