It just never ends. The two best soccer players in the world are constantly being compared because of their statistics, unbelievable plays, and awards. Thankfully for soccer fans, Messi and Ronaldo both play in the same league, La Liga, so we get to see them square off against one other constantly, and they're always being measured up against the best ever.

Ronaldo leads the league in goals scored this season with 38. Although Real Madrid has played 31 games, Ronaldo missed a few matches because of a kicking suspension earlier in the season. Ronaldo has 38 goals in his 28 games, with just seven matches remaining. Lionel Messi has the single season La Liga record for goals when he scored 50 in the 2011-12 season for Barcelona.

In order for Ronaldo to break Messi's single season record, he must score 13 goals in the final seven games.

A hard accomplishment, but not an impossible one. We recently saw Ronaldo score five goals against Granada, and he has successfully scored seven goals in his last three games. Can Ronaldo average two goals per game in the final seven matches to break the 50-goal plateau? Sure he can.

Ronaldo's La Liga career high is 46 goals, which he scored in the 2011-12 season. That year was very similar to the 1998 Sammy Sosa-Mark McGwire Major League Baseball home run chase because we saw both Messi and Ronaldo score a combined 96 goals that season. Ronaldo has the three highest scoring seasons for Real Madrid in terms of Spanish League scoring. Mexican striker Hugo Sanchez is the only other Real Madrid player to score more than 35 goals in a season, which he did in the 1989-90 season.

It will be tough for Ronaldo. He's on a scoring streak, having found the net in the last four consecutive games, but Real Madrid has a title to win. Real Madrid is just two points back of Barcelona for first place in the standings. If Ronaldo focuses too much on individual accomplishments instead of teamwork, it could cost his team a championship.

Having James Rodriguez back in the lineup will help a lot. It will relieve Ronaldo of a lot of double teams, thus freeing up more open shots for the Portuguese superstar.

Thankfully for Ronaldo, much of his toughest competition is already behind him. He has already played both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid twice. The toughest remaining opponents for Ronaldo to score against will be against Sevilla and Valencia, which has allowed the second fewest goals against in the league this season thanks to Brazilian goalkeeper Diego Alves.

While it's unlikely Ronaldo will surpass Messi in career (277 to 215) La Liga goals, he will always have the opportunity to break his single season record. Ronaldo is still 30 years old, and he shows no signs of slowing down. Will Ronaldo break Messi's single season record this year? That remains to be seen. With that being said, soccer fans will be watching anxiously as just seven games are left to be played.
