The suspect wanted for a deadly shooting that ended in the death of a North Carolina community college employee was arrested Tuesday in Florida, police said.

The 20-year-old suspect was a former student of the college. He was found sleeping in Daytona Beach. When police found a knife on him and found out his name, they arrested him without incident, USA Today reported.

Kenneth Morgan Stancil III was taken into custody and jailed in Daytona Beach. He is accused of killing Wayne Community College print shop director Ron Lane Monday morning. Lane was an employee of the college for 18 years and Stancil had worked with him when he was a student, officials said.

The college was placed on a lockdown Monday morning as police searched for the suspect. Officers, tracking dogs and a helicopter were utilized to try and locate the gunman.

Lane was killed shortly after arriving to work Monday morning on a third floor bathroom. Classes resumed Tuesday, but the third floor of the building remained closed.

Police in Goldsboro, the location of Wayne Community College, are investigating the shooting as a possible hate crime, Reuters reports.

"We're absolutely investigating that possibility," police Sergeant Jeremy Sutton told reporters at a news conference. 

Stancil is white and so was Lane. Authorities are trying to investigate if Stancil was affiliated with white supremacy groups. 

WNCN-TV reported that a relative of Lane's said that Stancil once worked with Lane but was fired. Stancil's mother, Debbie Stancil, said that Lane "made inappropriate sexual advances" toward her son, and that upset him.

School officials say that Stancil was fired from the work-study program March 3 because of poor attendance. Stancil is currently being held in jail without bail. He will be extradited back to North Carolina.

Wayne Community College is a two-year school located about 50 miles southeast of Raleigh.
