Apple typically releases a new iPhone every year. As more devices are released, the operating system is also updated. The next major update to Apple's iOS will be iOS 9, TechRadar reports.

Apple users could see a preview of iOS 9 this summer at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco this June. The event takes place June 8-12.

That is months ahead of the next expected iPhone, which will likely debut sometime in the fall.

Developers, who are registered through Apple will be the first to test out the iOS 9 beta versions. Then, sometime in September the public will get a chance to try the full version of iOS 9.

The three months in between the first beta and the final version will give developers time to fix any bugs found in the beta.

The latest iOS will likely phase out support for any iPhone 4 and iPad 2 devices. This means that any device that runs iOS 9 will have to have a lightning connection.

It looks as though some home screen widgets will be found in iOS 9. This means popular notifications that users want to see right on their home screen will be present. Items like weather, sports scores and calendar previews will be right on the home screen. This items can then be clicked on to be expanded.

A guest mode or kids mode could be seen in iOS 9. This means that other people wanting to use someone's iPhone could be given guest access to only certain apps and features of the phone.

Multi-tasking could be the new future for iOS devices. Instead of swiping between one app to the next, iPhone users will now be able to run two apps side-by-side on the same screen.

Bug fixes that have bothered iOS 8 users are likely to be addressed in iOS 9. The Health app is set to get some improvements as well.

The iOS 9 update is likely to be condensed so that more people can receive it. Past updates for iOS have required a big chunk of data, several gigabytes, in order to update. With iOS 9, this issue should be resolved so that iPhone owners with smaller amounts of storage will still be able to install the update.
