Rita Wilson Breast Cancer: Actress Leaves Broadway Play to Focus on Recovery Following Double Mastectomy
Actress Rita Wilson has announced that she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and has undergone a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.
Wilson released a statement to People revealing that she has taken a leave from her Broadway play, "Fish in the Dark," in order to focus on her recovery.
Thanks to the support of her family and the doctors who discovered Wilson's cancer early, she expects a full recovery. Wilson is scheduled return to her Broadway show on May 5.
In her statement, Wilson also explains the importance of getting a second opinion in regards to one's health. Wilson revealed that her friend suggested that she get a second opinion on her pathology and it was then that doctors discovered an invasive lobular carcinoma.
"A friend who had had breast cancer suggested I get a second opinion on my pathology and my gut told me that was the thing to do," she said. "A different pathologist found invasive lobular carcinoma. His diagnosis of cancer was confirmed by, yet, another pathologist."
She added, "I share this to educate others that a second opinion is critical to your health. You have nothing to lose if both opinions match up for the good, and everything to gain if something that was missed is found, which does happen. Early diagnosis is key."
In addition to releasing her statement, Wilson also shared the news of her diagnosis on Facebook.

She encouraged her fans to go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation website at BCRFcure.org and get a second opinion to ensure they are diagnosed correctly.
Following her announcement, many celebrities flocked to Twitter to send their love and support to Wilson via Twitter, E! News reports.
On "Today," Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb also sent words of encouragement and support to Wilson.
