Televisa & Mark Burnett Team Up for Family-Friendly Quiz Show 'Generation Gap'
Executive Producer and TV guru Mark Burnett, who has soared to the top with his record-breaking reality and faith-based TV shows, is bridging the gap with Mexico's Televisa to create "a new multigenerational, family-friendly quiz show" called "Generation Gap."
With so many forensic-based shows on TV, it's increasingly hard to find TV shows that are appropriate for the entire family. Back in the '90s, families would often gather in front of the TV to watch "Family Feud," "The Cosby Show," "Family Ties," "Growing Pains," and "Full House," among many others.
Well, Burnett would like to change that and bring the family back together in an inclusive way.
"We have to ask what keeps people tuning in as a family in their living room? It has to be something that is a family sit-down together, the kids, parents and grandparents. That's of really social value," Burnett said, according to Variety. "I love family-friendly formats. You've never seen us make anything which is profane or has sexual content."
On Monday,"' Generation Gap," was reportedly presented at Mip TV by Burnett and Ricardo Ehrsham, Televisa managing director, global entertainment formats. The family show was created by United Artists Media Group and is being co-produced by United Artists and Televisa. Burnett, who is known for his hits, "A.D.: The Bible Continues," "The Voice," "Shark Tank," and "Survivor," has also been appointed as CEO of the newly created United Artists Media Group.
According to Burnett, "Generation Gap" features a parent, grandparents and children from the same family who answer easy multiple-choice questions about subjects from their decade. If a contestant answers correctly a question aimed at another family member, the whole family scores more money.
"A grandparent getting, say, a Katy Perry question right would win even more money," Burnett explained.
So your grandparents may need to brush up on their pop culture to score big, but many grandparents are more hip than you think and have become more in tune with the Internet and social media, so watch out!
While presenting the trailer, Burnett added there are four families competing and two who move on to the final and win big prizes. "'Generation Gap" is "fast-paced, a lot of fun, very play-along and uplifting," he added.
Given that a lot of Latinos are family-centric and spend a lot of time together in the home with several generations of their family, "Generation Gap," could be a hit among the Latino TV-going audience as well.
It's also important to note that Burnett is reportedly invested in bringing the Latino market to the forefront.
"I'm very focused on Spanish-language crossover and Latin America. It's one of my passions. I think they represent an underserved market," said Burnett, who co-produced with Televisa "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" - "which has just scored a 41% share in Sweden."
