'Joe Dirt' Gets a Sequel Exclusively on Crackle [Watch]
Although new television shows and made-for-TV movies have premiered on digital platforms in the past, this is a first for movie sequels.
"Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser" will appear on Crackle this summer for an all-digital streaming premier, which marks a first with a previous movie that was shown in theatres, according to an article on Entertainment Weekly.
In the trailer, which was just released, we get a quick recount of Joe's earlier life and a small glimpse at what's new.
A quirky line that Joe Dirt, portrayed by David Spade, belts out at the end of the trailer, "I just get stupider," might roughly translate that the movie is destined to bring about the stylistic redneck humor approach that fans of the first movie loved.
Although the first movie did OK at the box-office at just under $31 million, it did achieve a cult-like status with it's dedicated fans.
"I've always liked the movie a lot," Spade said, according to EW. "But I also go by feedback from people I see or [what they write] on Twitter and Instagram. Besides 'Tommy Boy,' this is the most talked-about movie for me. After 10 years of people still asking about a sequel, we finally found a good way to do it.... Joe is a fun character to play. I'm stoked for everyone to see it."
In the new film, Joe is a married family man. But somehow (unknown at this point), Joe time travels to the recent past.
The film carries on with "The Beautiful Loser" as he tries to make his way back to his family in the present. As Spade said, "Joe 'keeps on keepin' on.'"
Returning to the film are Spade, Brittany Daniel, Dennis Miller, Adam Beach and Christopher Walken. It is being produced by Adam Sandler's Happy Madison production company and Fred Wolfe is directing it. Wolfe and Spade are both sharing writing credits.
