Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather Fight: Freddie Roach, Bob Arum Confident ‘Pacman’ Will Win on May 2
Trainer Freddie Roach and Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum believe Manny Pacquiao will win against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in their upcoming showdown on May 2 at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Roach, a seven-time Boxing Writers Association of America Trainer of the Year, said Mayweather is not the same fighter he was several years ago. The Hall of Fame trainer said that Mayweather's legs are gone based on what he saw from recent fights of the reigning pound-for-pound king.
Roach also played down reports Mayweather will look to utilize his right hand more than the usual in order to stop Pacquiao on his tracks. The 55-year-old trainer said he does not think Mayweather's right hand will hurt Pacquiao in their Cinco de Mayo weekend showdown next month.
"I don't think he'll knock Manny out with that right hand," Roach said via Tha Boxing Voice. "There's nothing I'm really concerned about so much. I know he's a good fighter, but I just think I have the better fighter. The hand speed's going to be the big, big difference. Manny's much quicker than he is."
On the other hand, Arum is also confident Pacquiao will prove his doubters wrong. The famed promoter said that most analysts and boxing fans are convinced Mayweather have the upper hand, but he said Pacquiao is determined to prove he is the better fighter.
Arum said that Pacquiao is showing dedication and is focused like the way he was when he fought Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya in December 2008. Arum said Pacquiao guaranteed a victory against De La Hoya in 2008 and the Filipino boxing icon promised the same thing less than a month before his fight against Mayweather.
"I knew that Manny felt not only was he competitive with Oscar, but he would beat Oscar," Arum said via BoxingScene. "He was telling me all along, 'Bob, don't worry. I'm going to come through for you. You're not going to be embarrassed. I'm going to beat him.' And that's what he's saying now. That's what I'm getting from him now."
Pacquiao, the reigning World Boxing Organization welterweight champion, is coming off a dominating win against Chris Algieri in November last year. The Filipino champion has not scored a knockout win since stopping Miguel Cotto in 2009, but he floored Algieri six times en route to his win four months ago.
