Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. wanted to make a statement on Saturday night, but the son of Mexican boxing legend Julio Sr. failed to live up to expectations to the disappointment of his fans.

Chavez Jr. absorbed a lopsided technical knockout loss to Andrzej Fonfara on Saturday at the StubHub Center in Carson, California in a fight where the former world champion was a heavy favorite to win.

Chavez, the former World Boxing Council middleweight champion, struggled to take control of the match as Fonfara managed to hit him with telling blows. Chavez went bleeding from his nose and had severe swelling around both eyes until he quit on his stool after getting knocked down for the first time in his career in the ninth round.

Chavez told trainer Joe Goossen that he does not want to fight anymore, claiming that he injured his leg. The 29-year-old Mexican said that he felt he was winning the fight, but he had to quit, pointing out Fonfara is too heavy for him at a 172-pound catchweight. Fonfara was actually way ahead of Chavez on all scorecards before the fight ended.

When asked about his future, Chavez pointed out that he felt confident heading into the fight after training hard for his return bout, but admitted that moving up to the light heavyweight decision was too much for his body.

"Maybe 170, 172 is too big for me," said Chavez, who had his best years at the middleweight division with a weight limit of 160 pounds. "I'm not sure what the future is. Maybe I go back down."

On the other hand, Fonfara is poised to get another big fight later this year or a rematch with Chavez. The 27-year-old Warsaw, Poland native that he felt confident after he managed to withstand a solid punch from Chavez early in their fight for the vacant World Boxing Council International light heavyweight title.

"I know Chavez is tough fighter. He doesn't quit. He's in good shape. But what I saw in the first round, I knew I would win this fight," Fonfara said via ESPN. "He hit me with one good punch, I catch it, and I say this guy don't have punch because he hit me as hard as he can."
