Season 5 of "Blue Bloods" is preparing for a massive finale that will start this Friday, April 24, at 10 p.m.

According to International Business Times, it all starts out with a Deputy Chief (guest star Dennis Haybert) getting gunned down in the streets of New York along with his wife in the episode "New Rules." The NYPD units have become admonished to the situation and Commissioner Reagan (Tom Selleck) has ordered all hands on deck for swift justice.

Detectives Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) and Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) have started their search with Mario Hunt (guest star Method Man), a well-known figure in a volatile gang known for their ruthless operations.

But the episode is also poised to set up the emotional finale, "The Art of War," the following week on May 1, according to TV Guide. 

Danny has to fight to keep his emotions in check after one of the Reagan's is shot and he's tasked with finding the shooter. He soon locates a shooter – possibly indicating there was more than one – but he has no witnesses. So he must keep himself emotionally stable and work the streets for information that can turn up hard evidence on the case. Danny personal feelings are edging their way out, and while working the case, there is a strong possibility he could lose his composure at any point.

According to Fox News, despite the series being the top-rated Friday night show, critics have been somewhat unkind with their critiques of the show, in comparison to other comparable police dramas.

Tom Selleck, in an interview with FOX411, expressed his opinions on the matter.

"The work on the show is superb," Selleck said. "It is truly an adult drama. I have no idea why. I think that kind of perception is fostered by people who haven't really seen it. I say that we are as good as any dramatic show on television."
