Apple Watch vs. Android Wear Watches: Which Is the Better Choice?
The Apple Watch official release is now just two days away and that means buyers of the watch will have to spend time getting used to a whole new device. Android Wear watches have been steadily introduced and people have had the time to use them.
But for those who are undecided, here's a guide to both watches.
Picking out a wearable device is a big decision. The device is something that users will wear and interact with all day. It is almost a replacement to their smartphones.
One good way to decide between an Apple Watch and an Android Wear watch is by sticking to the operating system that users are most accustomed with. That means if someone has always had an iOS-based iPhone, they will feel much more comfortable sticking to the iOS-based Apple Watch. If someone has always had an Android phone, they will probably want to stick to an Android Wear device.
There are at least eight Android Wear watches. That gives much more choices for buyers to pick from. The Apple Watch will only offer the Apple Watch, the Apple Watch Sport and the Apple Watch Edition. If cost is of concern, the buyer will want to choose the most affordable variety, the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch Edition can cost over $10,000. That does not leave much customization for Apple Watch buyers, meaning they will get a square-shaped watch. Android Wear watches come in a variety of shapes and sizes, giving them the advantage for picky buyers.
The screens on all wearable devices are awfully small so noticing much difference in quality will be hard.
The Apple Watch displays a resolution of 312 x 390 on the 42mm size and 272 x 340 on the 38mm. Samsung, Sony and Asus watches have resolutions that come in at 320 x 320. Android Wear has not stopped there though, the upcoming Huawei Watch is said to have a 400 x 400 resolution, according to TechRadar.
The Apple Watch has the Digital Crown on the side of the watch. This dial is similar to the time-adjustment knob that is found on most traditional watches. Android Wear watches rely heavily on swiping. The Apple Watch has the advantage with the Digital Crown that lets users scroll through items on their displays and engage with content.
The apps available for the Apple Watch is limited since the device is so new. All of the apps currently available for the Apple Watch have been available on Android Wear watches for a while already.
The battery life on Android Wear devices is much better than what the Apple Watch can offer. Apple CEO Tim Cook says the Apple Watch can last up to 18 hours before it needs a recharge. Some Android Wear watches can last almost two full days without a recharge.
Until the Apple Watch comes out with more shapes and sizes, improves its battery life and adds more apps, Android Wear watches will continue to be the better buy. However, based on initial figures from the Wall Street Journal, the Apple Watch could sell millions right away.
