Robert Downey Jr. Walks Out on Interviewer Asking About Past Drug Problems, Says It Was Getting 'A Little Diane Sawyer' [Watch]
With his new movie "Avengers: Age of Ultron" set to premiere in theaters on Friday, May 1, Robert Downey Jr. has been on a whirlwind press tour to help promote the movie.
He recently visited London on the tour. When he sat down to speak with Krishnan Guru-Murthy for Channel 4, he got a little more than he bargained for.
The interview started just like many others. He was asked several questions about his role in the movie and what role he played creating the modern characterization of Tony Stark.
Downey even referred to Stark's modern inception as Iron Man being poetic, referring to how Tony Stark was an arm's dealer and when shrapnel from one of his own weapons injured him, he had to use wealth and knowledge to keep himself alive.
But the interview took a turn, as Murthy pointed it in a direction that was away from the movie and toward his own personal life and his stay in prison.
When asked about a comment he made to the New York Time several years ago where he was quoted as saying "you can't go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal," Downey responded by simply saying that it "made sense at the time," referring to it being a different time and he might have had different opinions then.
"I could pick that apart for two hours and be no closer to the truth than giving you some half-a**ed answer right now," Downey said then added, "I couldn't even tell you what a liberal is."
Downey stayed for a short time after that, but when he was asked about his personal relationship with his father and how it was effected by his boozing and drug habits, Downey responded simply with, "I'm sorry, I really don't... what are we doing?"
He then walked out of the interview, appearing to respond to the request of one of his agents in the background.
Downing did get one last comment in before he left though, saying, "It's just getting a little Diane Sawyer in here."
This isn't the first interview with a Hollywood celebrity that Murthy has conducted that went bad. He interviewed Quentin Tarantino in 2013 that led to a more personal discussion about his views where Tarantino replied, "I'm shutting your butt down!"
