‘The Equalizer’ News: Sony Plans a Sequel, Denzel Washington Expected to Return
There have been a lot of plans lately to reverse the trends in adapting original content, such as projects for movies like "Galaxy Quest," "Scream" and "Minority Report" being adapted for the small screen. But the heyday of adapting television shows into movies is still alive and well.
"The Equalizer," which first started as a TV show in the '80s, returned in explosive fashion when it premiered in September 2014 on the big screen. It garnered a massive reaction to test audiences, which made talk about the sequel start before the first movie was even released, as reported by The Wrap.
The site reported in February of 2014 that screenwriter Richard Wenk had already closed a deal to write the sequel for the film, which did not even open in theaters until Sept. 26 of the same year. They were really looking to cash in on the momentum that they expected the first film to provide -- and it did not disappoint, making $192 million at the worldwide box-office.
Variety has reported that Sony has officially announced the sequel is coming to theaters. A strong box-office return coupled with home entertainment sales is what made the decision easy for them.
Based on an article from Comic Book, the film starred Denzel Washington and Chloe Grace Moretz. Washington played Robert McCall, a man with a mysterious past, possibly a black-ops government operative, who had tried to leave his past behind him and lead a peaceful existence. Moretz played Teri, a call girl who got mixed up with the Russian mob and the job left her in the hospital, clinging to life.
McCall, who befriended Teri early on, gets sucked into the danger when he visits her in the hospital while she is unconscious and sees what's happened to her.
The Hollywood Reporter claims that Washington is expected to return for the sequel, and possibly team back up with the original director, Antoine Fuqua. Washington and Fuqua also worked together on "Training Day."
