WNBA Star Brittney Griner, Fiancee Glory Johnson Arrested for Reportedly Assaulting One Another
All-Star WNBA center and reigning defensive player of the year Brittney Griner and her fellow WNBA fiancée Glory Johnson have both been slapped with assault charges after a Wednesday afternoon argument apparently turned physical.
ESPN, via The Associated Press, reports both Griner and Johnson now face suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct charges after police arrived at their Phoenix home to find Griner sporting injuries, including a "tooth mark," to her hand and Johnson lacerations to her right lip.
According to AZ Central, the Phoenix Mercury star center told investigators, "It turned into a fight. Broke up. We kept arguing, mouthing back and forth, clashed again, separated us, clashed again, separated us, and here we are now."
Police spokeswoman Lisa Kutis noted no weapons were involved and neither woman required medical assistance. Both 24-year-old women have since been released from custody.
The pair announced their engagement last summer and are actually scheduled to be married next month. WNBA spokeswoman Dina Skokos said league officials are now working to gather more information about the incident. Johnson is a member of the Tulsa Shock.
The 6-foot-8 Griner averaged 17 points and six rebounds in helping the Mercury claim the WNBA titlelast season. She also recorded a league record 129 blocks. Griner also helped spark Team USA to a gold medal at last year's world championship. She is a former two-time AP college basketball player of the year and led Baylor to a 40-0 season and the 2012 NCAA title, earning acclaim as the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four along the way.
The next year, the Mercury tabbed her with the top overall pick in the 2013 draft. Over her first two WNBA seasons, Griner has averaged 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
